Robin Giles President 2024

After four difficult years post covid, I am proud to become your President for 2024. I will strive to perform my duties to the best of my ability and be a credit to Gloucestershire Bowls Association. I wish to give thanks to my club Yate and District BC for their support and nomination for this honour. Also, I thank Olveston and District for seconding the nomination. However, most of all I must pay tribute to my late wife and thank her for all her patience, support and encouragement in taking up this challenge. She was so proud of me becoming your President and was looking forward to being with me throughout my season in office. Accordingly, I am dedicating my Presidency to her memory and any charitable donations raised will go to Brain Tumour Support, a small charity based in Thornbury. Bowls in Gloucestershire has been put on the map over the past two years, reaching the final stages of Bowls England men’s competitions at Royal Leamington Spa only to fall at the final hurdle, culminating in my predecessor’s club Cheltenham BC winning the Top Club Trophy. We have also had success at individual and club level in the Bowls England National Awards, winning three categories and nominated in several others. I am pleased to report that we are continuing in the same vein with nominations for three more individuals and wish them well so they all become award winners in February 2024. I will do my best to support our county players and their manager to go one step further and bring back silverware to our county. I also wish all competitors great success as they play in the County Competitions and congratulate eventual winners on representing Gloucestershire in the Bowls England Finals at Leamington. I do not forget we are a unified organisation, so I also offer my support to Maureen Richards-Smart in her third term as President and to her Ladies attempting to bring similar success to our county. I am looking forward to participating in County Friendly Matches in 2024 and working with the Officers and Officials elected to their various positions. I urge all members to consider supporting the county by making themselves available to help the selectors pick strong teams to face our neighbouring counties in our “friendly” fixtures. This will be the final season of operating under the current Constitution as we will have a new one in place for 2025. Please give your full support to the team bringi ng this in and if you have a particular skill, please volunteer your services to support and grow the future of Gloucestershire Bowls Association. Finally, I send my best wishes to everybody for a happy and successful season of bowling this coming year.
